Travis Funeral Chapel

Shirley R. Beers, age 97, of Novelty, Missouri, passed away Friday, March 15, 2024, at Knox County Nursing Home in Edina, Missouri.

Born on November 24, 1926, in Elmer, Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Bess (Chadwick) Gelbach. She attended elementary school in Hurdland. Her family then moved to the Kansas City area and she graduated from the Camden High School in 1944. Shirley had been employed with Standard Oil Company and Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City. While living in the Kansas City area she would attend social hours hosted by the USO. This is how she met her future husband; he was a soldier whom she loved to dance with. On May 4, 1956, in Kansas City, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Wellington Beers. They traveled the countryside for Wellington was a brick layer/stone mason and Shirley would gain employment as a secretary. Finally making their home on a farm near Benld Illinois where they cared for nieces and nephews. They sold their farm and moved to Novelty Missouri in 1987 so Shirley could be near her parents. Shirley was a very caring woman. She had many talents; gardening, bowling, singing, and she loved to travel.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 29, 2002. Also preceding her in death were her parents.

Surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

She was a member of the Novelty Christian Church.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2024, in the IOOF Cemetery at Hurdland, Missouri under the direction of Travis Funeral Chapel in La Plata, Missouri.
